General This beach is located a little to the north of Formby, in Lancashire. It had a long - and not altogether happy - history of use by naturists, which was ended by Police action. Details According to reports, some years ago a particular Merseyside Police Area Commander (based in Southport) received complaints about "sexual activity" on Ainsdale Beach. As a result he mounted a surveillance operation folowed by a raid using both mounted police and officers on foot, supported by vehicles and a police helicopter. Several arrests and prosecutions arose from the raid and few naturists dared to venture onto Ainsdale beach while that particular police commander remained in post. When he eventually left and was replaced by a new area commander, the "...I have no problem with [reasonably behaved] naturists on the beach; I do not see the previous problems at Ainsdale as a naturist issue; I do not even see the problems we had as a gay issue; I do see the problem as one of people, gay or straight, men or women, singly or in a group, behaving inappropriately on the beach and in the dunes immediately adjacent to the beach..." Unfortunately, having been once driven off, the naturists apear to havenever returned to Ainsdale and no-one appears to be willing to campaignfor its future use. Merseyside Police work in co-operation with all the landowners in arresting any nude people on Sefton Beach and in the dunes (which also includes Ravenmeols and Formby Point). Comments (5)

I've been formby and yes you do see some sexual activity in the dunes my be if naturist were aloud in the open this would put a end to most of this

Even on the warmest days you are unlikely to see any naturist activity on beaches in Sefton. This is a shame because long stretches at both Ainsdale and Fromby are very quiet. The council and police (using Quad bikes) are very anti-naturist largely due to a small number of sexual incidents.
This stretch of coast is only suitable for sunbathing and discreet nudity is possible with care though to be honest not advisable. Swimming on this stretch of coast is not good. written by the man, December 16, 2007
i too have been to ainsdale beach and spent a very pleasant hour there nude i saw a few other naturists there ( all single men ) and one single male who was masterbating and asking me to join him i felt threatend and left and have not returned since !!! such a shame as there are no other beaches close to me

Last year was a wash-out (2007), but the previous year I went to Both Ainsdale and Formby Point of several occasions and ALWAYS encountered naturists discretely sunbathing. The trick is to find a depression in the top of a tall dune and lie down before undressing. Occasionally have a look over the edge to see if there is anyone about, if so, pull on your shorts quickly. If there is more than one of you, make sure one acts as a lookout for the other(s). Not ideal I know, but better than getting your collar felt or an £80 fixed penalty fine.

This summer I often saw plenty of nude sunbathers and groups in the dunes, and we had some great summer evenings - unfortunately for most of us the car parks have become favourite spots for an activity known as 'dogging' so when we returned to the cars on the last occasion we went we were pretty shocked by what was going on in the car park with what looked more like an orgy - pretty shocking and unfortunately my wife wouldn't go back because of it. It was mainly heterosexual, but the couple of ladies who were dogging were so outnumbered that it was very intimidating just walking through them.
