Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark, Herm

General
The noted "traditional values" espoused by these islands off the coast of France have lead to beach nudity being officially and widely frowned upon. The official line from one local tourist office is 'we don't allow that sort of thing here'.

An e-mailed enquiry to the States of Jersey Police produced the following reply:
"According to our Legal Dept. the situation you describe below [anyone sunbathing nude on a beach] would constitute an offence in Jersey. We have what's known as the "Policing of Beaches Regulations" which creates an offence for anything that offends public decency, (nude sunbathing would be included). Topless sunbathers could be prosecuted under the above regulations however the activity is more acceptable these days and complaints from the public are very rare."

People have been arrested for beach nudity on Jersey, although there are rumours that changes to the island's rather backward attitudes may be in the offing.

However, local naturists are said to find "no problem" in getting an all-over tan at carefully-chosen parts of local beaches, but they remain "well aware that many of the locals would not approve of this behaviour". Also, the Bailiwick of Guernsey (comprising Guernsey, Sark, Alderney and Herm) is said to be much more tolerant than Jersey.

Guernsey

'Joannet' is the main naturist beach on Guernsey and has been since 1922. Access is via the parking area at Icart Point.
"A group of 10-20 regular naturists meet on this beach each weekend and even during the week, subject to weather. The cove is only accessed by a stainless steel ladder so is not suitable for the frail. The cove becomes 'cut off' at tides of 6.7m or higher. At low tide it is possible to scramble through a gully to La Bette"

'La Bette' is the 'other' naturist beach on Guernsey - in fact it is a rock plateau.
"Access to La Bette via the cliff path is EXTREMELY dangerous, so most now walk the extra distance to Joannet."

Of the other beaches reported to be used by naturists, 'Soldiers Bay' is close to town and is 'policed' regularly, so most locals avoid the use of this beach.'L'Eree' has a good pebble beach but is not as frequented as Joannet. It is close to a tourist attraction called Lihou Island, so is easy to get to and find as parking is only a few hundred meters away. Pleinmont, Oyster Rock, Fort Doyle, and the Pequeries are lonely spots and should be accessed with great care, as Guernsey can see 10m tides regularly.

Is there an update to the situation in Jersey? For many years they have been expecting changes leading to more tolerance for naturist visitors.

Tried "Telegraph Bay" today, a sign at the top says bay closed due to rockfall. Hey I'm fit lets try...got 2/3 rds of the way down and the steps disapperared, it got really dangerous so i had to turn around and face the long climb back. If any one in Alderney knows of any accessable naturist spots or got a secluded garden they wouldn't mind sharing please let me know. smilies/wink.gif
