Attitudes to public nudity are reputedly much less favourable in the USA, when seen in comparison with most European countries.

In 1983, The Naturist Society commissioned an independent Gallup Poll of the attitudes of Americans concerning nude sunbathing and "skinny-dipping". The results were used for years as evidence of the acceptance of naturist activities in the U.S.A.

In the year 2000 the Naturist Education Foundation commissioned Roper Starch to ask the same three questions in a nationwide survey and this was repeated in 2006

The 2006 results are claimed to show that 25% of Americans have gone "skinny dipping" or nude sunbathing in a mixed group of men and women at a beach, at a pool, or somewhere else. This approximates to 55 million individuals.
